Flounder Targeting Tips
- Be patient when setting the hook, these fish like to move the bait around in their mouths a bit before eating.
- Overcast days with light wind can be good for flounder fishing, as these conditions make it easier for flounder to ambush prey.
Scientific Name: Paralichthys albigutta
Common Names: Gulf Flounder, Southern Flounder
Family: Paralichthyidae
Identification: The Gulf Flounder has an oval-shaped body and is left-eyed, meaning both eyes are on the left side of the body. It has a brown or gray coloration with various spots and blotches that can change to match its surroundings.
Habitat: Found in the Gulf of Mexico and along the Atlantic coast of the United States, Gulf Flounder prefer sandy or muddy bottoms.
Size: Gulf Flounder can grow up to 24 inches in length and weigh up to 7 pounds, though most are smaller.
Diet: Small fish, crabs, and shrimp.
Reproduction: Gulf Flounder spawn in offshore waters during the fall and winter months. They have a unique life cycle that includes a metamorphosis from symmetrical larvae to the adult flat, bottom-dwelling form.
Fishing Tips: Gulf Flounder can be caught using live bait such as shrimp or small fish, or with artificial lures that mimic their prey. They are known for their delicate, white flesh and are a popular target for both recreational anglers and commercial fisheries. However, they are closed for harvesting from October 15th to November 30th.
