NE Florida Kingfish Fishing
Kingfish Targeting Tips
- Kings feed on small fish and squid and take both natural and artificial baits. Live baits include pogies, herring, Spanish sardine, ballyhoo, and mullet. Lures should be flashy sub-surface lures or large fish-like plugs. Use 20-pound line and tackle, or heavier for larger kings, with a wire or mono leader.
Kingfish (Scomberomorus cavalla):
Family: Scombridae
Common Names: King mackerel, kingfish
Habitat: Kingfish inhabit coastal and offshore waters from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. They are commonly found around reefs, wrecks, and other structures.
Appearance: Kingfish have a slender, torpedo-shaped body with a forked tail. Their back is a bright iridescent blue, transitioning to silver on their sides and belly. They have a distinctive lateral line that curves steeply down near the middle of their body.
Size: Adult kingfish can grow up to 5.5 feet (1.7 meters) in length and weigh up to 100 pounds (45 kg).
Diet: Their diet primarily consists of small fish such as sardines, menhaden, and anchovies, as well as squid and shrimp.
Reproduction: Kingfish are known to spawn in offshore waters during the summer months. Females release eggs into the water, where they are fertilized by males. The eggs then float on the surface until hatching.
Lifespan: Kingfish can live up to 20 years in the wild.
Fishing Techniques: Popular methods for catching kingfish include trolling with live bait or artificial lures, as well as drift fishing with live bait.
Kingfish are known for their powerful runs and are popular among anglers for their fighting ability. They are also sought after for their meat, which is considered excellent for grilling.
